Treatment For Eczema

Treatment for eczema comes in many forms, however the best forms are the long-term, natural treatments that you can use on an on-going basis. Sometimes it may be necessary to use medication in the form of steroids to clear up severe eczema, but this can never be an on-going method and should only ever be used at your doctor’s recommendation.

So what are some of the natural treatments for eczema that are effective and safe? Firstly, you should take a look at your diet and remove any foods which are known to cause eczema.

The worst offenders are foods which contain artificial colors, flavors etc. These itch inducing ingredients are usually referred to as E numbers, sulphites and mono-sodium glutamate. Try to avoid foods that contain these ingredients where possible and always check the packet before purchasing food.

A good rule of thumb for eczema sufferers is to include as many natural foods in the diet as possible to avoid the above dietary mistakes.

Now, that being said, unfortunately, to make things complicated, there are also natural foods which are known to causes eczema and should also be avoided. These foods do not necessarily cause eczema in all sufferers but for some.

To find out if these foods cause you to have an out-break of eczema, you should keep a food diary of the foods you eat on a daily basis and when your eczema flared. After a period of around one month, you should see a pattern emerge and be able to isolate foods which cause eczema.

The following foods can cause eczema in some individuals:

  • Dairy products e.g. milk, cheese, yoghurt
    Wheat
    Eggs
    Fish
    Tomatoes
    Carrots
    Nuts
    Alcohol

This list is not exhaustive and while you are carrying out your food diary experiment, you may discover a link between other foods and your eczema. This is the first step to finding a natural treatment for eczema and living an itch free life.

What Causes Eczema?

Eczema, which can develop at any age, is usually caused by an allergy to a particular substance or as a result of extreme stress and/or anxiety. This allergy or allergenic substance can be in the form of food or drink or something that the skin has come into contact with such as dust and mould or animal hair.

Once the allergen has come into contact with the body, the skin becomes irritated and inflamed then becomes itchy. This is the circumstances in which eczema occurs.

Now, in order to have the allergic reaction in the first place, the eczema sufferer will have a predisposition for eczema which is usually inherent in the genetic make-up which can be passed down from either parent or even from a grandparent where a generation is skipped altogether.

Others may develop eczema due to having sensitive skin which is prone to irritation. This is slightly different from those who have the condition from birth as a result of their DNA but can still be every bit as aggressive and severe.
The main substances causing skin irritation and eczema are:

Food preservatives (commonly known as E numbers)
Other foods such as wheat, eggs, nuts and fish
Alcohol (sulphites used in alcohol especially wines and beer)
Dust and dust mites
Mould
Animal hair/dander
Perfume
Heavily perfumed make-up and skin cream/lotions
Detergents
Biological clothes washing powder
Material such as polyester and acrylic

This list is not exhaustive and can be fewer or more depending on the individual. In order to determine which foods you may be allergic to, it is a good idea to have a skin test performed by your doctor. This way, you can eliminate the chances of an eczema flare up caused by food.
To prevent eczema occurring at all, you may wish to consider your lifestyle and if any of the above irritants come into contact with your skin on a regular basis.

Eczema On Hands

One of the most common areas of the body for eczema to appear, is on the hands. This is mainly due to the constant contact with allergens that we are exposed to on a daily basis, such as household detergent products, beauty products, dust and ink.

If you suffer with eczema on hands you will probably also find that your hands are extremely dry, which can also cause itchiness leading to an out-break of eczema.

The first thing to ensure, is that you sufficiently moisturize your hands everyday. The best measure is to use dermatologically tested creams in order to avoid an allergic reaction.

Ideally, you would be using organic hand creams. You can also put a little of your cream into a portable container to take with you to work or when you go out, incase you should visit the rest-room and need to wash your hands, Hand cream should always be applied after the hands are washed.

Next, you should prevent hand eczema by avoiding potential allergenic substances such as the above listed substances, where possible. This doesn’t mean you have to walk around in a bubble. It is actually very easy to avoid allergens. Of course, you may not be allergic to certain substances so what to do first is, keep a note of when your hands become itchy and what they came into contact with.

If you have had eczema on hands for a while, you will probably already have a good idea of what causes them to become itchy. At home, it is also a good idea to wear cotton lined rubber gloves when cleaning.

The most common reason for hand eczema is the hands coming into contact with cleaning products, as most of them contain very harsh chemicals.

How To Get Rid of Eczema

This is obviously the big question on every eczema sufferers lips and we will start by acknowledging that getting rid of eczema should include a multi-faceted approach, due to the diverse nature of the skin condition.

Now, there are certain causes for eczema that are usually the same in all sufferers and we can locate the cause for eczema and therefore prevent it.
Eczema can be defined as a set of allergies that cause the skin to erupt, inflame and become itchy. A high percentage of eczema sufferers have eczema due to contact eczema.

This type of eczema means that the skin becomes irritated when it comes into contact with something it is allergic to. As stated, these substances are usually the same across the board and are usually quite easy to ascertain.
The most common substances that cause eczema are:

  • Dust & dust mites
  • Mold
  • Cleaning detergent chemicals
  • Perfumes and perfumed products
  • Newspaper ink
  • Animal hair and dander

To make the first steps to clearing your skin, you have to find out what causes YOUR eczema. Start by keeping a close eye on when your eczema flares and what you have touched. Keep a note over a period of a few weeks and you should start to notice the same allergenic substances appearing. Now you can avoid these substances.

The next most common reason for eczema is down to stress and lack of sleep. Many people who have never had eczema in their life can develop it, at any age, due to high levels of stress in their lives. This could be down to taking school/university exams, grief, moving home, divorce or separation and any number of other stressful life events.

If you are very stressed and find that your eczema has appeared again or worsened, take these steps to reduce stress.

  • Take a bath every night adding lavender oil to the water (moisturize your skin well afterwards).
  • Instead of watching television before going to bed, read a book or listen to soothing music.
  • Try not to leave loose ends before going to bed. Make sure you have sorted out a “things to do” list so you won’t stay awake thinking about what you need to do or how you are going to do it.

Life can get very stressful and the last thing you need is to have to deal with eczema as well. Following these calming tips should help you on your way to dealing with eczema inducing stress.

Eczema On Scalp

Eczema On Scalp

Another common area of the body for eczema to appear is the scalp. Here we will be having a look at what causes eczema on the scalp and the best ways to treat and prevent it.

With the increasing use of hair products and hairstyles that require straighteners and curling tongs, it is no wonder that the scalp is taking a beating and those who are prone to, or already have eczema on other parts of the body, find that they develop eczema on the scalp also.

The scalp is a very delicate network of skin and any harsh chemical or excessive heat near it, can cause irritation. Following are some of the worst hair products to use on a sensitive scalp, in order of severity.

  • Bleach
    Perming lotion
    Relaxant
    Hair Dye
    Hair spray
    High heat straighteners
    High heat blow drying

The first 3 hair products can actually cause permanent damage to the scalp if the scalp responds badly to the chemical and/or if the treatment is left on too long or incorrectly prepared.

To avoid any eczema on scalp it is best to avoid all of these hair products for at least 6 months until your scalp has had a chance to heal and strengthen. Of course moderate blow drying and hairspray/gel is fine but only in small doses if you want your scalp to repair.

To increase your chances further for full scalp repair, it is a good idea to use organic shampoo which further reduces chemicals coming into contact with the scalp. Ordinary shampoos include relatively harsh chemicals in the ingredients to create a lather so, although you will find that an organic shampoo does not lather quite so efficiently, you are safe in the knowledge that your scalp is protected as well as your hair.

In some cases, if the eczema on the scalp is severe, it may be necessary to use a medicated shampoo until the eczema has healed. In this case, you may need to ask your doctor for advice. Alternatively you could ask your local pharmacist for eczema on scalp shampoo. There are some tar-based shampoo that works very well on scalp eczema.

These days, image is all important and the health of our bodies seems to come second. Many people who have this mindset soon regret it when they are left with a scalp that is ravaged and in some cases, irreparable.
Treat your scalp like you would treat the skin on your face and you will reap the rewards with a healthy, flake-free scalp and luscious hair.
